Gut essen in Berlin: Das Thai-Restaurant Bai Tong

Vor ein paar Tagen waren wir endlich einmal wieder in unserem kleinen thailaendischen Lieblingsrestaurant. Obwohl wir jetzt, wo wir vorwiegend in Thailand leben, eigentlich nicht unbedingt in Berlin auch noch Thai essen muessten – ohne wenigstens einen Besuch im Bai Tong geht es nicht.

Man vermutet eine solch tolle Kueche bestimmt nicht in einem einfachen Imbissrestaurant im Wedding, aber es ist eine Tatsache, dass ich noch nirgendwo in Thailand ein besseres Gaeng Om gegessen habe als hier. Das findet man allerdings nur auf der thailaendischen Karte.

Ich kenne die Chefin und Koechin schon aus der Zeit, als sie ihr Restaurant noch in Berlin-Moabit hatte. Damals hiess es noch „Doi Suthep“, und die Auswahl sowie das Lokal war deutlich groesser. Damals stand noch Khao Soi, das koestliche Nudelgericht aus Chiang Mai, auf der Karte (das ist sozusagen das thailaendische Laksa oder Mohinga). Wenn man jetzt die Chefin fragt und vorbestellt, kann man es immer noch haben. Ich wuesste nicht, wo sonst man das in Berlin essen koennte – man muesste es schon selbst kochen. Klick zum Rezept.

Uebrigens, in der thailaendischen Community hier ist das Bai Tong sehr bekannt und wird auch gerne fuer geschlossene Veranstaltungen gebucht. Wenn man also sicher gehen will, dass man auch einen Platz bekommt, sollte man besser anrufen.

Delicious Food in Berlin: Thai Restaurant Bai Tong

A few days ago, we visited our small favorite Thai restaurant again. Now that we live in Thailand most of the time, it’s not a must to eat Thai food while we are in Berlin, but we like the place so much that we like to visit it at least once every year.

One doesn’t expect to find such delicious food in a simple Imbiss (German for: a small informal restaurant that also does take-away) place in Wedding, but in fact I wasn’t able to find a better Gaeng Om anywhere, even in Thailand. But you should know that Gaeng Om, and some other dishes are only listed on the Thai menu.

I know the owner and chef from the time when her restaurant was in Berlin Moabit, when it was called “Doi Suthep”. The restaurant as well as the menu were much bigger than now. The menu included a delicious Chiang Mai noodle dish called Khao Soi, the Thai version of Laksa or Mohinga. You can ask the Chef if you can order this dish in advance – it may well be worth to try. I don’t know any other place in Berlin where you can find it – except in your own kitchen. Klick for the recipe.

BTW, the Bai Tong restaurant is well known in the Thai community, and is used sometimes for private events. It’s not usually necessary, but if you want to make sure that there’s a place for you, just give them a call.
